Financial performance and net premium income
The Indian firm’s official exchange filing shows that HDFC Life Insurance’s net profit rose 13.6% year-on-year to ₹500.80 crore in the quarter ended Sept 2026, from ₹447.15 crore in the same period of the prior fiscal year.
Net premium income grew by a strong 15.7%, with the current quarter income at ₹21,727.37 crore, up from ₹18,777.31 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year.
In the second quarter, new business surged 7.6% to ₹1,009 crore against ₹938 crore in the previous year’s corresponding period, indicating steady basic growth across the major operating areas.
Brokerage perspectives and growth expansion
However, notable institutional brokerages have maintained a positive outlook on the insurance share, despite the recent price reduction. Systematix Institutional Research also held a Buy rating on HDFC Life with a price target of ₹650, increased from ₹630 earlier, valuing the company at 1.7 times its embedded value per share of ₹383 for fiscal 2028.
The brokerage said new business for the second quarter was 2.2% better than expectations and 31.7% up from a year before because of a small base in the first quarter. Analysts at Elara Securities have maintained their buy rating on the stock, with a price target of ₹740 per share, suggesting near 37% upside from the current market rate. Establishing new business value increased by 4.3% due to operating leverage and favorable product mix, Elara noted.
The board of HDFC Life Insurance approved an incremental subordinated debt of up to ₹500 crore for future expansion in the third quarter of financial year 2027. This capital raise will provide approximately 400 bps of capital headroom to reshape the growth runway in front of the risk-based capital rollout, says Systematix Institutional Research.
Elara Securities expects an annualized premium equivalent growth of about 11.8% and annualized new business value of 14.6% during the fiscal year through 2029, but signals that proposed changes in those distributions by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) are a conversation overhang in the sector.
Conclusion
The shares of HDFC Life Insurance (HLI) fell 3% after the company’s second quarter results, even as the company delivered solid numbers. Operational factors remain well established, with a 13.6% increase in net profit, a 15.7% rise in net premium income, and 15.2% of the value of new business generated. With projected strong price hikes from major price-related brokers such as Systematix Bank and Elara Securities, and planned capital hikes through subordinated debt, HDFC Life is poised to weather the regulatory adjustments and lead long-term growth in India’s life insurance industry.
