Indian automobile retail sales declined 23.8% in October to 31.72 lakh units, according to FADA Data
SUMMARY
Rising sales registered India’s overall decline in automobile retail sales by 23.8% year-on-year in October as total volume across the country slipped to 31.72 lakh units. The downturn reflects largely on an exceptionally high base set in the previous festive season, according to official data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations. Overall vehicle retail sales at 31,72,466 units, despite the year-on-year decrease, saw sequential growth of 25.05%, as reported straight from September, reflecting continued festive positivity across all vehicle categories.
Growth across commercial vehicles
Two-wheeler retail sales came under significant pressure during the month, as indicated by the granular performance breakdown analysis. The 28.35% year-on-year decline in the two-wheeler sales category was seen in the retail sales segment, characterized by 23.21 lakh units during October.
Two-wheelers experienced a dramatic decline in rural markets, with sales there falling 33.97%, while urban markets saw a comparatively small decrease of 20.77%, industry data showed. The passenger segment was relatively resilient, with absolute growth of 4.23% and ended the month with a total of 5.08 lakh.
Positive growth metrics were recorded for several key commercial and utility segments in contrast to the contraction seen in two-wheelers and passenger vehicles. In October, commercial vehicles retail sales rose by 2.29% year-on-year to 1.15 lakh units.
Tractor retail registrations rose by 3.10% year-on-year to 1.41 lakh units, while three-wheeler sales grew 3.97% year-on-year to 79,285. Retail sales for wheel-mounted construction equipment recorded strong growth, rising by 22.07% to 7,434 units in the current period. Commercial vehicles, three-wheelers, and tractors each posted their largest sales for the month of October on record, industry people said.
Shift toward clean energy and sequential growth dynamics
One of the significant takeaways from the retail data for October was the buoyant uptake of alternative fuel technologies among Indian consumers. The electric vehicle market recorded an all-time sales count of around 3.55 lakh units, increasing EV market penetration from 6% a year ago to 11.5%.
During the month, sales of alternative fuel vehicles (including compressed natural gas, hybrid vehicles, and pure electric vehicles) exceeded total sales of petrol vehicles. Compressed natural gas and hybrid vehicles, combined, represented 41.83% of total vehicle retails, outperforming petrol vehicles at 41.6% for the month of October.
Speaking on industry figures, the leadership of the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations said that the share contributor was shifting calendar dates of major festivals and the fact that October was the second-highest October retail month on record in the Indian automobile market goes back to the high base during the previous year.
The 25% sequential growth over September is a better indicator of actual consumer demand during the main festive season of shopping, highlighting stability across the automotive system, industry leaders said.
Conclusion
Indian Automobile and Motor Industry (FAMA) Retail Sales Report for October gives an overview of complexities in the Indian auto industry. A high base effect and comparatively weak registrations in rural two-wheelers contributed to a decline in overall vehicle retail sales by 23.8% year-on-year to 31.72 lakh units, while record sales levels for commercial vehicles, three-wheelers, and tractors indicated a strengthening in the market as a whole. With electric vehicles accounting for 11.5% of the market and CNG, hybrid, and electric vehicles becoming increasingly dominant over petrol, India is moving towards a faster electric vehicle transition.
