JioHotstar expanded its global footprint to the MENA region through a strategic STARZPLAY partnership
JioHotstar

SUMMARY

JioHotstar is the Indian streaming platform owned by JioStar. Jio-Hotstar has officially extended its international reach to the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) market. The strategic partnership with regional streaming service provider STARZPLAY has helped this major market expansion. In this newly formed partnership, JioHotstar will serve as a dedicated streaming platform directly available on the STARZPLAY app and web platform in the entire MENA region. This strategic partnership enables JioHotstar to benefit from STARZPLAY’s existing regional infrastructure to offer a vast collection of digital Indian entertainment efficiently to the regional audience.

Flexible subscription tiers and multilingual entertainment offerings

STARZPLAY’s new streaming platform now features a rich selection of digital products that cater to a host of viewing habits. JioHotstar Originals is released simultaneously with its first airing in India, along with television programming streamed on JioStar channels, favourite films, and reality shows, etc., for subscribers in the MENA region.

The content library is also available in multiple languages, such as Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Bangla, to accommodate a wide range of readers. The entertainment consists of flagship shows like the upcoming season of Koffee with Karan and the current season of Bigg Boss, being aired in a whopping 6 languages.

The platform also accounts for the socio-demographic characteristics of the region and provides a comprehensive Malayalam content library tailored to the needs of the vast Malayali community that constitutes the user base in the MENA markets.

To encourage user adoption, the platform has categorised two user tiers to cater for consumers in the region. JioHotstar will be accessible via the STARZPLAY PLUS subscription plan at AED 34.99 (approximately AED 45 per month). The service can also be accessed via the MAX plan, at AED 49.99 per month (approximately $13.6).

The upscale MAX package combines the entire JioHotstar entertainment library and the sports broadcast portfolio available on STARZPLAY. This tiered structure offers a choice between dedicated entertainment viewing and a package comprised of live sports coverage.

Strategic vision and platform scalability

The move in the MENA region will follow the launch of JioHotstar 1 month ago in the international market, outside of India, to the UK, Canada, and Singapore. That first expansion happened back in September and brought over 160,000 hours of entertainment in over 12 Asian languages.

These initial offerings included movies, television shows, original series, local programming, reality television, children’s and anime programs. The platform also launched a new quarterly and annual subscription option, plus subscribers from that region who were already on Hotstar were shifted to their respective JioHotstar subscription plans during that September rollout. This global movement is echoed by the recent reinterpretation of the MENA expansion.

The partnership is well placed to reach the large South Asian population living across the MENA region, and also engage an international audience interested in Indian cultural entertainment.

This new growth in the region follows the overall corporate objective of JioHotstar to become a global streaming media company. The international launches in September marked the first step towards a major global rollout under a common brand name, JioHotstar.

According to JioHotstar, the company now has over 500 million monthly active users spread across more than 19 countries, with a content library of over 300,000 hours of digital programming across 30 languages. It has been expanding its international infrastructure through partnering with regional players like STARZPLAY, continuing to target the demand of international audiences.

Conclusion

This partnership between JioHotstar and STARZPLAY signals a major step toward JioStar’s global expansion. JioHotstar’s extensive library of content with more than 300,000 hours of title playout is being leveraged into a regionally established streaming service, marking a seamless transition for Indian viewers to access high-demand programming, reality shows, and regional language content. This move was made with a structured monthly subscription plan and is targeted squarely at the vast South Asian expatriate community, thereby boosting the market stance of both platforms and speeding up the transformation of JioHotstar into a major international digital entertainment network.
