The act on the eve of World Sparrow Day 2022 was well received by the public, and the tweet sparked a debate over the sparrow population’s collapse.
Many people have fond memories of waking up to the lovely singing of sparrows. Because to the degradation of their natural flora, sparrows, which were formerly plentiful, have fallen in numbers.
Indian Forest Service officer Parveen Kaswan tweeted a photo of a plaque dedicated to a sparrow killed in a police shooting in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad in March 1974 on World Sparrow Day, which is commemorated every year on March 20 to promote awareness about the species.
“It’s #WorldSparrowDay today. Whose sounds are fading with each passing day. But I have something special to share with you today. Ahmedabad has the world’s only plaque devoted to the #sparrow. Dedicated to a sparrow killed by police in March of 1974. People are stunning!!” In a tweet, Kaswan stated.
“During the 1974 Roti Ramkhan (Navnirman Movement) in Gujarat, on 02-03-1974,5:25 pm, an innocent sparrow was killed here in irresponsible police shooting,” the inscription says.
The act was well received by the public, and the tweet sparked a debate over the sparrow population’s collapse. “In Ahmedabad, sparrows were as plentiful as pigeons. They’ve vanished, and no one knows what happened to them. We even had a swarm of vultures circling the riverbank. We used to live near the river, and I used to get irritated by vultures on the balcony since they were frightening and I couldn’t play near them,” one user said.
The Nature Forever Society of India, in collaboration with the Eco-Sys Action Foundation of France and other national and international organisations, has created World Sparrow Day. Mohammed Dilawar, a conservationist from India who founded The Nature Forever Society, is well-known for his efforts to save sparrows. Its goal is to not only save house sparrows, but also to start a conversation about the bird.
