One of the new Apple iPhone 14 series’ notable features is the ability to employ satellite communication to enable customers send a message when they are in an emergency and cannot obtain cellular reception. The feature, which is available on the entire iPhone 14 series, including the Pro and Non-Pro versions, could be a lifeline in unpleasant scenarios, especially if you enjoy adventure.
When an iPhone 14 user contacts or texts 911 and is unable to interact due to a lack of cellular reception, the iPhone will attempt to connect you through satellite communication. Satellite connectivity is based on line-of-sight communication with satellites orbiting above the Earth’s surface, and while this is a slower method of communication, the technology is useful when you’re outside the range of a traditional cellular tower, which is what normally keeps our phones connected.
When the phone detects cellular coverage, users will get an option to send a “Emergency Text via Satellite.” When the feature is activated, users will also see a new interface on their screen that will take them to the greatest satellite connectivity from their location.
Apple states on its website that “using a satellite connection differs from sending or receiving a message via cellular.” A message may take 15 seconds to send in perfect conditions with a direct view of the sky and the horizon, and more than a minute to convey under trees with light or medium vegetation.”
Apple states that when emergency services are called through satellite, all messages are encrypted and decrypted by Apple before being handed on to the appropriate emergency agencies. However, the communications themselves may be “retained by emergency assistance centres and the relay provider in order to improve their services and in accordance with applicable legislation.”
Satellite connectivity is only accessible for iPhone 14 series handsets and will initially be offered to users in the United States and Canada with the iOS 16 upgrade in November 2022. If you purchased an iPhone 14 series model outside of the US, you will be able to use the feature in the US as well. iPhone 14-series phones purchased in China mainland, Hong Kong, or Macao, however, will not have the capability.
Apple also stated on its website that the feature may not work in areas with latitudes greater than 62 degrees, such as northern Canada and Alaska.
