Avinash Sable of India broke Bahadur Prasad’s 30-year-old 5000m national record. At the Sound Running Track meet in San Juan Capistrano, California, the 27-year-old from Maharashtra set a new national record with a time of 13:25.65.
Avinash Sable finished 12th in his race in San Juan, which was won by 1500m Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen, but it was an impressive effort for someone who was just racing in his second competitive race over the distance. He had earlier ran the 5000m in the Federation Cup in Kozhikode, finishing in 13.39.43 seconds.
Avinash Sable’s national record in the 5000m makes him the first Indian to have national records in three different sports. In addition to his major race, the men’s 3000m steeplechase, Sable owns the national record in the half marathon.
