The PC market saw a significant downturn in the second quarter of 2022 as a result of COVID-19 lockdowns in China that hampered production. The overall number of desktop and notebook shipments decreased by 15% yearly to 70.2 million units, according to Canalys data, the lowest level since a comparable interruption in the first quarter of 2021.

The price of devices in the biggest PC markets in the world has increased as a result of unregulated inflation, adding to the headwinds against demand. In the second quarter of 2022, the shipping of laptop computers decreased 18.6% to 54.5 million units. Due to continued education procurement as compared to the same quarter last year, this number is down for the third consecutive quarter.

However, desktops fared considerably better, increasing modestly by 0.6% to 15.6 million units, mainly to the robust commercial demand brought on by economies opening up, which encouraged spending on desktop upgrades and refreshes. Despite growing difficulties elsewhere, the premium commercial category remained a bright spot for the entire PC industry.

Significant order delays were caused by disruptions to factory and port operations in Shanghai, Kunshan, and Jiangsu for all the main PC suppliers. Although coordination and production began to improve by the end of May, Q2 output was below average.

Additionally, China, the second-largest PC market in the world, had a steep decline in domestic purchase due to limitations on the movement of people and commodities as well as a decrease in economic activity. Although consumer and business spending indices showed improvement in June, the overall state of the economy is still unknown as long as the government’s Zero-COVID policy is in place.

Despite a 12% drop in shipments to 17.5 million units in the second quarter of 2022, Lenovo kept the top spot in the global PC market. However, among the top five suppliers, HP was the OEM whose shipments declined the most, by 28%, to 13.5 million units. In third place, just behind HP, Dell saw a relatively modest loss of 5% at 13.2 million units. The next two on the list, Acer and Asus, had reductions of 19% and 5%, respectively.
