SUMMARY

Nova Spectral AI is a young physical artificial intelligence vision company. Nova Spectral AI has raised ₹21.15 crore (approximately $2.25 million) in its recent seed funding round. The investment round was led by Shastra VC. Prominent angel investors and Equirus InnovateX Fund participated in the round.

Strategic capital allocation and core mission

As stated in the official press release issued by the company, the raised capital would be used to build an engineering team that would create a functioning prototype within a period of 18 months.

Established this year by Anish Priyadarshi and Sanjeev Kumar, Nova Spectral AI is based in Bengaluru and combines advanced semiconductor design with artificial intelligence vision technologies. By focusing on research and creating a prototype, the startup will be able to make progress in developing technology for commercial implementation in specific industries.

Nova Spectral AI’s fundamental objective is to develop cameras and optics that can generate images under conditions where visual detection becomes difficult, including situations of low lighting, haze, and smoke.

These functionalities are designed to augment the operational efficiency of tactical drones while minimizing India’s dependence on foreign nations for sensing devices in crucial defense intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations.

Nova Spectral AI’s mission is not just limited to defense. The company’s advanced optical vision solutions are being used for autonomous vehicles, robotics, wearables, and smartphones alike that demand performance under harsh operational conditions.

Innovative technology and multiple mission-critical sectors

The heart of Nova Spectral AI’s innovation is lead-free, lightly doped short-wave infrared image sensor chips fabricated directly on a common silicon complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor platform.

This sophisticated technology uses specialized cameras to accurately image complex scenes in highly hazardous and critical environments where conventional optical vision systems would otherwise fail, such as in heavy haze, low light, and dense smoke.

The startup says by adopting CMOS-compatible fabrication processes and indium arsenide colloidal quantum dots, the costs of the production of the sensors could be reduced by up to 100 times over compared to the conventional indium gallium arsenide technology.

The new indigenous quantum dot shortwave infrared (SWIR) image sensors made by Nova Spectral AI have the potential to revolutionize several mission-critical industries. The technology is developed to enable intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance platforms, extend the capabilities of tactical drones, and decrease national reliance on foreign sensor hardware in defense applications.

In addition to the defense segment, the startup is aggressively exploring commercial and consumer products such as autonomous vehicles, advanced robotics, wearable electronics, and next-generation smartphones that demand high-performance vision in challenging operating conditions.

Conclusion

The funding round, which was led by Shastra VC and received sizeable participation from other investors, indicates investor confidence in indigenous deep-tech innovations in India. The advanced colloidal quantum dot image sensor technology employed by Nova Spectral AI is set to solve some of today’s most pressing vision problems in defense surveillance and physical artificial intelligence, while all the while extending space-based imaging capabilities further than before. The company has a clearly outlined strategy to bring the prototype into the field within 18 months and is poised to set new benchmarks in infrared imaging and move into global markets.
