McDonald’s purposeful embracing of nostalgia with the return of Grimace is a throwback to its well-known advertising efforts from the 1970s and 1980s.
The adorable purple creature known as Grimace, who won the hearts of kids in the 1970s and 1980s, has made a triumphant comeback, according to McDonald’s. The revelation was announced by the world’s largest fast-food chain on Twitter, and the reaction from customers and other businesses was amazing.
The company’s social media team has started tweeting the character, Grimace, and modified its profile picture to reflect this. Elon Musk, a billionaire in the tech industry, joined in the fun by tweeting a screenshot of a chat between Grimace and AXE deodorants.
Many other people joined in the fun of the original topic. The renowned dictionary Merriam-Webster joined in by posting a screenshot of the word Grimace had tweeted, which, unfortunately, was not included in the dictionary. Grimace responded, “Can we change grimace in the dictionary (sic),” never one to back down.
Intrigued, Webster demanded a definition. McDonald’s responded, “Just a little purple guy,” with a dash of humour. Grimace continued the fun banter by interacting with other commenters and joking that it was still learning how to tweet with its purple hands.
This summer, McDonald’s will add a brand-new burger and shake to its menu in addition to the triumphant return of Grimace. The Grimace shake, which is defined as a shake with a whipped topping and purple berry flavour, will be the star of the new menu. A 10-piece Chicken McNuggets or a Big Mac, together with the shake, fries, and new Grimace Birthday Meal are also available.
McDonald’s purposeful embracing of nostalgia with the return of Grimace is a throwback to its well-known advertising efforts from the 1970s and 1980s. Grimace first appeared as a huge purple creature with four limbs and two legs who adored milkshakes. After the initial campaign, Grimace received a redesign, having only two arms, giving him the look he has today.
Notably, Grimace is making a comeback at a time when McDonald’s has stopped using Ronald McDonald as its official mascot. A string of “creepy clown sightings” that swept the country in 2016 led to a deterioration in the clown’s once-loved status as a symbol of childhood. Ronald was McDonald’s famous mascot until reports of people wearing clown costumes carrying weapons turned innocent practical jokes into a cause for fear.
