On Wednesday, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health said that a single case of monkeypox virus infection had been verified in a man who had just been to Canada.

On Wednesday afternoon, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) claimed its tests verified the virus was monkeypox.

“The case poses no concern to the public, and the individual is hospitalised and in excellent condition,” the state agency said, adding that it was working with the CDC and relevant municipal boards of health to do contact tracing.

The Canadian Public Health Agency released a statement late Wednesday stating it is aware of the monkeypox cases in Europe and is actively monitoring the situation, but that no cases have been recorded as of yet.

Monkeypox is a rare viral infection that is comparable to human smallpox but is milder. It is usually seen in west and central Africa. It was initially discovered in the 1970s in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In the previous decade, the number of cases in West Africa has grown.

Fever, headaches, and skin rashes that begin on the face and progress to the rest of the body are among the symptoms.

The virus does not travel easily between humans, according to the Massachusetts agency, but transmission can occur through contact with bodily fluids, monkeypox lesions, contaminated bedding or clothing, or respiratory droplets following prolonged face-to-face contact.

It said that no instances of monkeypox had been reported in the United States this year. In 2021, Texas and Maryland both reported cases in patients who had just been to Nigeria.

In the last two weeks, several clusters of monkeypox have been detected in many countries, including Portugal, Spain, and the United Kingdom, according to the CDC.

In the United Kingdom, Portugal, and Spain, a few cases of monkeypox have lately been recorded or suspected.

Following Britain’s notice for the virus, Portuguese officials claimed they had detected five cases of the illness, while Spain’s health services said they were testing 23 probable cases.

Since the first instance of the disease was reported in Britain on May 7, European health officials have been monitoring possible outbreaks. Since then, six additional cases have been discovered in the nation.
