In contrast to Simonyan, who is joining Microsoft as a chief scientist in the same new division, Suleyman, who was also a co-founder of DeepMind, which Google acquired in 2014 to support its own AI efforts, will lead Microsoft’s recently established consumer AI business, known as Microsoft AI. Mustafa will answer to Chief Executive Nadella. Mustafa’s job at Microsoft is as EVP and CEO of Microsoft AI.

Microsoft has experience with inflection AI. Less than a year ago, the business received $1.3 billion in capital spearheaded by the cloud behemoth. When the funding was announced, Inflection AI claimed to be constructing the largest AI cluster in the world, with 22,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs.

According to a tweet he posted, Suleyman will also oversee AI research and products for Copilot, Bing, and Edge.

Nadella announced in a blog post that “Several members of the Inflection team have chosen to join Mustafa and Karén at Microsoft.” “Some of the most eminent AI researchers, engineers, and inventors in the world are included. They have conceptualized, led, introduced, and worked on some of the most significant advances in AI within the past five years.

Foremost among these renowned AI startups stands Inflection AI. It was established in 2022 by Reid Hoffman and Suleyman, the co-founders of LinkedIn, to create AI systems that could have conversations, respond to queries, and help with various tasks. Inflection AI announced in a blog post that it will refocus on its AI studio business, developing and testing generative AI models for clients.

Inflection AI announced that it will host Inflection-2.5 on Microsoft Azure as part of the transition/situation, claiming that this will assist in reaching “creators everywhere.” The statement continued, “We’ll also make sure it comes to other cloud hosting platforms shortly.” Although it isn’t currently available, the API will be available very soon.

Microsoft has been developing the new AI unit for a while. When Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, the co-founders of OpenAI, briefly left the company in December, Nadella made them an offer to join.

As the company—and the globe—enters the second year of the AI platform transition, Nadella stated today that Microsoft “must ensure we have the capability and capacity to innovate boldly.”

Microsoft’s choice to enlist the founders of Inflection to lead its latest consumer AI division reflects a strategic maneuver to harness the knowledge and ingenuity of experienced industry veterans. Microsoft is positioning itself to advance substantially within the consumer AI sector by enrolling individuals with a demonstrated history of pioneering advanced AI technologies. This decision underscores Microsoft’s dedication to maintaining a leading position in technological progress and refining its solutions to more effectively address consumer demands. With this capable leadership team guiding the way, Microsoft is well-positioned to propel the advancement of AI-driven products and services that will define the trajectory of consumer technology.
