Linux Laboratories secures $70 million in equity funding

SUMMARY

Linux Laboratories is a pharmaceutical formulations company based in Chennai. Linux Laboratories has raised $70 million in an equity funding round. The investment was from ChrysCapital and Tata Capital Healthcare Fund III. This transaction includes primary capital investment and secondary share offers, in order to provide ChrysCapital with a substantial minority interest in Linux Laboratories. The equity component also allows Tata Capital Healthcare Fund II to exit its investment completely, with returns of nearly 4x. The investment round marks a shift in the investor appetite for domestic pharmaceutical platforms with known high-performing, specialty-focused portfolios.

Funding deployment and diverse portfolio

The $70 million fresh capital is to be used for the new round of enterprise expansion under Linux Laboratories. The company targets strengthening its market footprint in its primary specialty therapeutic areas and growing in adjacent medical segments.

The cash injection will allow continued brand rationalization and investments focusing on internal manufacturing and research and development gains. These expansion initiatives are consistent with the company’s goal to keep its business competitive in the domestic branded formulations market.

Linux Laboratories is a specialized domestic formulations firm established in 2007. The company has developed a strong portfolio of more than 125 brands with over 400 stock-keeping units. The first specialty that Linux Laboratories developed was the treatment of diseases of the Central Nervous System (CNS), including epilepsy, neuropathic receptors, depression, and autism.

In the years that followed, the platform expanded its market into dermatology, cardio-diabetics, and nutraceuticals. Co-founder and Executive Director S Ananda Kumar pointed out that the company was founded with the belief that a portfolio focused on science with affordable quality and accessibility of healthcare has great competitive power against the largest players in the Indian pharma industry.

Strong market demand and manufacturing capabilities

By successfully integrating these organic and inorganic brand development and marketing tactics, Linux Laboratories has expanded its footprint. These ranged from key individual brands from leading pharmaceutical companies like Cipla and Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories to the integration and scaling of the Biomedica and Indiabulls Pharmaceuticals portfolios.

Linux Laboratories maintains a WHO-GMP certified manufacturing plant to ensure adequate support for its brand’s backward integration. The company is also building a contract development and manufacturing arm, and strengthening its international footprint in several countries through exports.

Kshitij Sheth, Managing Director of ChrysCapital Advisors, said the investment fits into its overall investment philosophy of supporting fast-growing domestic formation companies led by dynamic entrepreneurs and who have a special focus on chronic therapy.

India’s branded formulations market continues to gain investor interest as the incidence of chronic and sub-chronic diseases rises, and the market for specialty business is becoming a larger and larger part of medical portfolios that are increasingly prescriber-centric, said Linux Laboratories. Avendus Capital acted exclusively as the financial advisor to Linux Laboratories for this landmark transaction.

Conclusion

The $70 million raise of equity funds from ChrysCapital and Tata Capital Healthcare Fund III is a significant achievement for the growth of Linux Laboratories. The company has a robust portfolio of more than 125 brands, a manufacturing unit recognised by a WHO-GMP certificate, and a dual model of organic growth and strategic brand acquisitions that has created a solid pharmaceutical platform. With the increasing demand for speciality and chronic therapy formulations across India, Linux Laboratories is poised to expand its research, manufacturing, and therapeutic portfolio with assured returns to its investment partners.
