Hailing from a farming family, Shanker Meena embarked on the MBA journey in 2013 with a vision for stability in income and a desire to establish a business that transcended the uncertainties of nature. “I wanted to do something that could ensure the stability of income – a business for the long term that did not depend much on nature. Though I took admission to pursue an MBA, I lost interest as I was always thinking about business ideas,” shares Shanker.

Recognizing the burgeoning health consciousness and the escalating demand for nutritious, cholesterol-free food products in India, Shanker identified the mushroom market as a lucrative avenue. To equip himself with comprehensive knowledge, he diligently pursued varied training programs, including at the ICAR-Directorate of Mushroom, Haryana Agro Industries Corporation (HAIC), and in Bengaluru. Understanding the scientific nuances of mushroom cultivation became his priority.

In August 2017, Shanker took a bold step and established a mushroom spawn unit within the confines of his Jaipur residence. Setting up the lab demanded meticulous planning and investment in specialized equipment, including a laminar airflow cabinet for a sterile working environment, vertical autoclaves for sterilization, seed germination chambers, incubators, and other requisite machinery.

The initial phase was not devoid of challenges. Shanker’s determination, supported by a loan from the Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana (PMMY), facilitated the expansion of his venture. Currently, his spawn production stands at an impressive 80 tonnes per month, translating to a staggering monthly revenue of Rs 13 lakhs. The scalability potential of his business promises further growth and success.
