India’s human spaceflight programme, Gaganyaan, will be successful by the end of next year, according to ISRO Chairman S Somanath, who was speaking at a Human Space Flight Expo on Thursday in Bengaluru. He also stated that after 25 years, India should be able to turn space into a permanent abode.

Somanath stated, “Astronauts have returned from Russia and are conducting training. They will engage in a variety of theoretical, experimental, and simulation activities during the course of the following year, as well as get training in certain mission-related abilities. Recently, a significant test of the crew module and the propulsion module was carried out. Additionally, we want to test a revised crew abort system using a test vehicle that will be sent to Sriharikota for launch in two or three days. This procedure allows us to abort the mission in the event of an emergency. By the end of 2023, we aim to have completed all of our testing and be able to achieve our goal.”

Making space livable for people is crucial, according to Somanath. The continuation of life on Earth cannot be guaranteed in the future. We as humans are not prepared to go extinct. In order to escape the gravity of the earth and fly to space and establish a livable environment for life to flourish, it is crucial to use space and rocket technologies, the ISRO Chairman added.

The ISRO chairman did note that India still needs to do more space exploration. In fact, if you don’t step foot on Mars or the moon today, you won’t be able to in the future. Therefore, it is our duty to develop the technical tools necessary to go to and dwell in space right now. “It is my hope that we would be able to turn space into a permanent home for Indians when India celebrates 100 years of independence,” he remarked.

An interactive model of the Ganganyaan mission, scaled replicas of launch vehicles, satellites, a crew module, a space suit, a space toilet, the Mars rover, and an interactive model of the thermal control system were all featured in an exhibition that Somanath had previously inaugurated at the Jawaharlal Nehru planetarium.

It will have a sky theatre where The Indian Space Odyssey: Sounding Rockets to Gaganyaan, a documentary tracing the development of India’s space programme over the previous 60 years, will be shown.

Live lectures and demonstrations on Gaganyaan, satellite communication, space exploration, and other subjects will also be part of the show, which is open till Sunday.
