SUMMARY

The Indian wholesale price index, based on the rate of inflation, increased to 11.39% on a yearly basis in September 2026, from 9.92% seen in August, and continued to be in double digits, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry figures show. The All India Wholesale Price Index of all items stood at 112.5 in September, rising from 110.8 in August as wholesale prices increased in many important industries in the country’s economy.

Sectoral breakdown and significant increase

The official release highlights a broad-based upward trend: mineral oils, food articles, crude petroleum and natural gas, coal and lignite, basic metals, chemicals and chemical products, textiles, rubber and plastic products, and electrical equipment were among those items that contributed. These collections are all price increases broadly, because of a general rise in prices for raw materials, energy inputs, and manufactured goods.

In fuel and power, inflation accelerated to 25.85% in September, up from 22.93% in August, making it the highest of all the division groups tracked by the ministry. The fuel and power category index increased to 110.5 from 108.3 in the same period. This substantial rise highlights the strong positive pressure that energy prices put on general price movements in the wholesale market.

The inflation rate of manufactured items went up to 9.76% in September, from 8.37% in August, while the corresponding index was at 110.2 in September, from 108.8 in August. The primary articles index rose to 8.67% in September from 7.76% in August, with the corresponding index rising to 120.3 from 118.1.

Conclusion

The data released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry shows that the inflation rate in India’s wholesale price index has been increasing on an upward trend until September, rising from 9.92% to 11.39%. Inflation was fueled by fuel and electricity, and other factors, including a rise in manufactured goods, primary articles, and the food index. This is seen as a result of the changes occurring in the economy, which have been captured in the wholesale and producer price indexes.
