The Government of India’s “National Intellectual Property Awards 2021 and 2022” were won by the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras). The university has been named the best academic institution in India for commercialization, grants, and patent filing.
The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, administers this award. On the basis of patent applications, grants, and commercialization, the officials choose the winner.
“It is essential to defend intellectual property for any nation to rise to global leadership. The IIT Madras director, V. Kamakoti, stated that this award “has unquestionably spurred IIT Madras to produce and safeguard more and more intellectual property of societal value resulting to Atmanirbhar goods during the Amrit Kal.”
In total, 120 patent applications (at least one Indian applicant) were submitted in India in 2021, while 68 were submitted outside. 133 patents in all, seven abroad, six licenced, five assigned, and 11 commercialised. A total of 133 patents were granted worldwide.
These honours are given out each year to the top achievers in the fields of intellectual property (IP) creation and commercialization, including people, institutions, organisations, and businesses. These accomplishments have strengthened the nation’s IP ecosystem and promoted innovation and creativity.
