Although Google is the most popular search engine in the world, 46% of US customers surveyed by CivicScience last year indicated they still began their product searches and research on Amazon. According to data by CivicScience, 18% of Gen Z online consumers initially use TikTok, which is also growing in popularity. With some of its brand-new, artificial intelligence (AI) powered shopping discovery capabilities geared at attracting younger audiences, Google is paying attention.

People will be able to examine how clothing fits across a range of body types, from XXS to 4XL sizes, thanks to a new virtual “try-on” function that goes live on Wednesday. Images of several models that the company took while developing the capability will have clothing layered on top of them.

Google released a new research paper outlining its work in conjunction with the announcement, and the corporation said that a new image-based AI model it built internally allowed it to deploy such a service. For realistic representations of the apparel, the way the fabric stretches and wrinkles while it is worn is taken into account. With the help of businesses like Anthropologie and Everlane, the try-on option will begin with women’s shirts and move on to men’s clothes later.

As users test out its brand-new “search generative experience,” which Google initially unveiled at its I/O developers conference last month, the business also stated that it will start bringing in more sources of data. That service is currently only accessible through the company’s experimental Search Labs product.

Google previously disclosed that it was leveraging a range of web-based sources to provide AI-generated information on things like the most family-friendly hotel in a specific holiday spot or the best waterproof Bluetooth speaker. It is currently incorporating user reviews for its AI model to use as well.

The business is also releasing updates to Google Maps’ current functionality. Four new cities are now receiving the immersive view service, which employs AI to give users 3D tours of famous locations: Amsterdam, Dublin, Florence, and Venice in Italy. Google is adding locations like the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Prague Castle to its collection of landmarks that are accessible in immersive view, bringing the total number of locations to more than 500 across both the iOS and Android apps.

Meanwhile, glanceable directions will enable users to view turn-by-turn driving, cycling, and walking directions from their phone lock screens. As users follow their trips in real-time, Google claims they will be able to view updated ETAs. The global rollout of such a feature will begin in June.

In Google Lens, the image-recognition tool that utilizes a phone camera to identify objects and text, some AI functions have been available for some time. According to the business, Lens will find visual matches for a picture of a rash or a skin bump when a user snaps a shot of it. These matches could help individuals in their searches. According to Google, the function is intended to be a jumping-off point for research rather than official medical advice.
