Farmers will make money and have an easier time making money since Mithila Makhana is now registered with GI Tag. People outside of Bihar will be able to use this auspicious material with reverence due to the Geographical Indication Tag on Mithila Makhana during the festival season, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal stated in a tweet.

Once a product receives this label, no individual or business may sell a comparable product under that name. This tag is good for ten years, after which it can be renewed.

Legal protection for that object, preventing unauthorised usage by others, and increasing exports are some further advantages of GI registration.

A GI is primarily a produced product (handicrafts and industrial goods), an agricultural product, or a natural product that comes from a specific geographic region.

It is verified that the GI was registered in the name of Mithilanchal Makhana Utpadak Sangh by the GI registry certificate.

Such a name typically carries a guarantee of quality and originality, which is mostly attributed to the location of its origin.

The correct procedure for registering GI items entails the submission of an application, preliminary examination and scrutiny, show cause notice, publication in the geographical indications journal, opposition to registration, and registration.

Any group of people, producers, organisations, or authorities created by or operating under the law are eligible to apply. The applicant must speak for the producers’ interests. The GI holder has the legal authority to forbid others from using the same name.

Basmati rice, Darjeeling tea, Chanderi fabric, Mysore silk, Kullu shawl, Kangra tea, Thanjavur paintings, Allahabad surkha, Farrukhabad prints, Lucknow zardozi, and Kashmir walnut wood carving are some of the well-known products that bear this label.
