Jason Kilar, a former CEO of WarnerMedia, has joined the board of directors at the Roblox online gaming platform maker. Kilar will join board chairman and CEO of Roblox David Baszucki, lead independent director Anthony P. Lee, and board members Gregory Baszucki, Christopher Carvalho, Gina Mastantuono, and Andrea Wong as a result of the nomination, which became effective on September 13.
With Kilar’s extensive background as a senior executive in the media and entertainment industry for more than 15 years, including his recent role as CEO of WarnerMedia, his appointment signals Roblox’s strategic objective of expanding its scope beyond gaming into a broader entertainment platform. Before this, Kilar co-founded and led Vessel, a subscription-based video service acquired by Verizon in 2016. He also co-founded Hulu and served as its CEO before departing in 2013. Furthermore, Kilar assumed a seat on the board of directors at DreamWorks Animation.
Currently, Kilar serves on the Wealthfront Inc. and Opendoor Technologies Inc. boards. As per Roblox’s official statement, he obtained his bachelor’s degrees in journalism and business administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and holds an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. This hiring decision aligns with Roblox’s response to its maturing user base and its aspiration to offer new experiences to a slightly older demographic.
The business recently revealed intentions to provide avatar-based voice conversations as part of a larger drive to cater to consumers 17 and up at its annual developer conference. In addition, Roblox CEO David Baszucki predicted that thousands of adults would eventually connect on Roblox over the following five years and establish genuine relationships.
In the company’s future vision, individuals can craft avatars and clothing items using language prompts and generative AI tools. The application is also gaining popularity in virtual reality, with its Meta Quest VR app achieving over 1 million downloads.
Roblox currently boasts a daily user count of 66 million, and as of the previous year, nearly 40% of its user base comprised individuals aged 17 and above. According to the corporation, it tries to appeal to this demographic with virtual worlds with more violence, romance, crass comedy, gambling, and alcohol imagery. This would make Roblox more of a media and entertainment company than its kid-friendly games, including those where you make pizza, construct theme parks, engage in pretend play, navigate obstacle courses (lobbies), or adopt cute animals.
Kilar’s expertise could help the business in those attempts and with the difficulties posed by serving audiences from various demographics on a single platform.
“Jason Kilar is a well-respected leader in the entertainment and media industry, and his experience in the space is of value to the Board as Roblox continues to scale globally,” said David Baszucki, the CEO of Roblox, in a statement.
Jason Kilar said, “I am honored to join Roblox, a company I have long admired and supported as they leaned into the future.” Roblox is transforming how people interact with one another and how producers may produce fun experiences for them. I’m eager to join the board and contribute in any way I can to making Roblox’s vision a reality.
Kilar’s announcement on X drew praise from various sources, including analysts, investors, the media, and Spotify CEO Daniel Ek, who described the combination as “a great combo.”
