Since a planned drone collaboration hit a snag some eight or so years ago, there has been tension between DJI and GoPro. GoPro debuted its Karma drone after the transaction fell through, but it eventually failed to gain traction in a market that DJI continues to dominate.
On the other hand, DJI has had much greater success in entering the action camera market. The Osmo Action had some early hitches to iron out, but it also brought fresh concepts to a category whose time had once seemed to be up. Since then, the competition between the GoPro Hero and the DJI Osmo Action cameras has become extremely close.
Consider the recently unveiled Osmo Action 4. The product squares off against the GoPro Hero 11 Black, and when it comes to features, there isn’t an obvious winner between the two. Low light is one area where DJI does surpass the competition, though. The new Osmo Action has a significantly enhanced sensor to improve nighttime photography. That might be sufficient justification for switching to DJI, depending on what you’re seeking in a device of this type.
The Action is also slightly smaller than the Hero, measuring 70x44x33mm versus 71x55x34mm. Despite having a bigger battery (1770 against 1720mAh), it weighs less than the GoPro at 5.4 ounces. Up to 18 metres, or eight more than the Hero, are waterproof on the Action.
With 5.3K (60 fps) video compared to 4K (both cameras can shoot at up to 120 fps in 4K), the GoPro outperforms the DJI in terms of resolution. In essence, the screens are identical. Both have a 1.4-inch front-facing screen, while the DJI’s rear screen is 0.02 inches bigger, measuring 2.27 inches.
The cost of the Osmo Action 4 is $399. Although it costs $70 more than its predecessor, GoPro’s new price (down from $499) is comparable. At first sight, I’d say DJI is in the lead. Starting today, Action 4 is available.
