Dixon Technologies, a local contract manufacturer, will produce Google Pixel 8 smartphones in India, according to two industry insiders. According to the report, sources from the government and industry suggest that Dixon Technologies has been chosen for this project, with trial production expected to start soon.
They expect the first batch of made-in-India devices to reach the market by September, following the recent start of trial production. According to an ET report, Dixon’s facility will produce the Google Pixel 8, which accounts for about 80% of all Pixel sales in India, with a monthly capacity of 100,000 units.
They intend to export 25-30% of these units. Previously, manufacturers in countries like China and Vietnam produced Pixel devices. In October last year, Alphabet, Google’s parent company announced plans to manufacture Google Pixel smartphones in India, marking its entry into the country’s make-in-India smartphone initiative.
This manufacturing shift to India follows Padget Electronics, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dixon, signing a deal with Taiwan’s Compal Electronics, a global manufacturing partner for Google. Padget, benefiting from India’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, has offered competitive production costs to Google.
This comes as Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in October, “We shared plans at #GoogleforIndia to manufacture Pixel smartphones locally and expect the first device to roll out in 2024. We’re committed to being a trusted partner in India’s digital growth — appreciate the support for Make In India.”
