The Public Works Department (PWD) has began survey work around the city to roll out tiny cells for the 5G network by leveraging public furniture such as electric poles, hoardings, and so on, so Delhi residents will soon be able to experience high-speed 5G network access.
Some divisions performed surveys in their respective areas and submitted the results to Geospatial Delhi Limited (GSDL). Others have posted tenders for undertaking a topographical study of several PWD roads using DGPS (Digital Global Positioning System).
In its survey, PWD will identify areas and locations, as well as street furniture such as electric poles, hoardings, overhead sign boards, traffic signals, metro pillars, government offices/property, buildings, government colonies, school buildings, and so on, along with type and size coordinates, and will submit the data and drawing marking to the Engineer in Charge for checking its correctness in GSDL.
A high-level conference is planned for September 27 under the supervision of Delhi Lieutenant Governor (LG) Vinai Kumar Saxena.
Senior officials from the Department of Telecommunications, the Ministry of Communication, the Delhi Police, the Delhi Metro Railways Corporation, the Delhi Development Authority, and telecom corporations will attend this conference.
Government ministries such as PWD and others will offer infrastructure assistance for the 5G deployment. Who will select government buildings, power poles, bridges, and gantry signs to be used in the rollout and submit the data, after which telecom firms will deploy cell towers and tiny cells for the 5G network.
Major government offices and departments who presently utilise 4G networks will totally migrate to 5G.
Sources further added that a conference at the level of Delhi Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar was also conducted two weeks ago when telecom firms such as Vodafone, Airtel and Reliance and officials from different ministries of Delhi government participated.
“Recently, a conference was conducted on the topic where telecom firms and officials from various departments attended, the project is in its earliest stage but preliminary work has begun on our side. Essentially, the telecom firms will roll out the 5G network policy in Delhi, but the government agencies involved will offer infrastructure assistance to these corporations for the deployment of the 5G network across the city,” said a source.
According to sources, LG would grant his approval for placing tiny cells for rolling out the technology in buildings run by Delhi Police, DMRC, NDMC, and DDA. The Delhi Government has approved installation in the departments and areas under its authority.
