On Sunday, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha opened a multifunctional movie hall in each of the twin south Kashmir districts of Pulwama and Shopian.
“We will soon construct similar multifunctional film theatres in every district of Jammu and Kashmir.” “Today, I dedicate such cinema halls to the youth of Pulwama and Shopian,” Sinha said in Pulwama to media.
Sinha called the event as “historic” on Twitter.
“A momentous day for J&K University!” Multipurpose Cinema Halls were inaugurated in Pulwama and Shopian. It provides services such as movie screenings, information, and young skill development,” he explained.
The first INOX multiplex in Kashmir will debut next week in Srinagar’s Somwar region. It will include three movie theatres with a combined seating capacity of 520.
When asked if the government intended to send a message, Sinha replied, “There is no message.” This is a Mission Youth project led by (secretary) Shahid Iqbal Choudhary.” Until the late 1980s, the Valley had over a dozen separate movie halls operating, but they were forced to close their doors after being threatened by two violent gangs.
Though officials attempted to restore some of the theatres in the late 1990s, terrorists foiled such efforts in September 1999 by carrying out a devastating grenade strike on Regal Cinema in the heart of Lal Chowk.
Two additional theatres, Neelam and Broadway, had opened but had to close owing to insufficient attendance.
