When discussing the issues faced by law enforcement agencies, leaders in cybersecurity addressed them during an annual event of the World Economic Forum at Davos. Secretary General of INTERPOL, Jürgen Stock pointed out the current ongoing challenges resulting from emerging technological innovations such as Artificial Intelligence(AI) and deepfakes.
Stock noted that the world’s law enforcement bodies are at a crossroads because of cybercrime volumes. He argues that though law enforcers create awareness about fraud, even more cases of this scam emerge.
Stock played it thus: Global law enforcers are drowning in volumes of cybercrime activities. All the tools through which the internet exploits fraud are entering a new world. Crime is always growing. The higher the level we increase awareness, the greater the cases you find. It is most cases that have an international perspective.
While discussing, the panel also discussed technology such as Fraud GPT which is a malicious form of ChatGPT AI chatbot. Stock reported that cybercriminals are developing an underground network by clustering themselves based on skill. He further stated that even these bad actors have a rating system that enables them to offer their services with greater security.
What is FraudGPT?
FraudGPT Chatbot is an AI-powered chat tool that utilizes the abilities of generative models to generate realistic and coherent texts. It works by automatically creating content based on the user’s input prompts, allowing hackers to create messages that can convince people to do things that they normally would not.
How Does FraudGPT Work?
Being an AI-based chatbot, FraudGPT is a language model that has been trained using huge data of texts; hence, it can respond like humans when faced with input questions. Cybercriminals exploit this technology to create deceptive content for various malicious purposes:
Phishing Scams: FraudGPT is a tool that creates phishing emails, text messages, or websites with sufficient realism to solicit login credentials for financial information and personal data.
Social Engineering: Unsuspecting users are made to reveal sensitive details or make dangerous intentions by the chatbot, mimicking a conversational human personality that wins their trust.
Malware Distribution: FraudGPT can generate fraudulent messages that tempt users to click on links containing malicious components or download attachments to infect them through their devices.
Fraudulent Activities: The AI-fueled chatbot is a tool that hackers can use to generate fraudulent documents, invoices or payment requests the cases of which result in people and companies falling for financial scams.
The dangers of AI in cybersecurity.
Though artificial intelligence has been improving cybersecurity tools for a long time, Threats that use AI include brute force, denial of service (DoS), and social engineering attacks. Stock argued that regular users without any special technological background can stage DDoS attacks, and with AI capabilities expanding the range of cyberattacks is only increasing. Over time, as AI tools become less expensive and easier to access, therefore the dangers that artificial intelligence poses for cybersecurity will rise accordingly.
What is a GPT?
With an increasing demand for AI chatbots, measures should be taken to protect oneself from fraud. Preventive measures and caution are at the core. In this way, by reading the gaps and implementing strong cybersecurity measures people can strengthen their defenses against these emerging threats for a safer digital land.
