Kshama Bindu, a 24-year-old Vadodara woman, said on Thursday (June 2) that she will marry herself later this month in a “act of self-love.” The ceremony, which is being billed as one of the country’s first cases of self-marriage or “sologamy,” is set for June 11.

Sologamy, also known as self-marriage or autogamy, is the act of marrying oneself in a public ceremony. The symbolic wedding is utilised by many to express their self-love and independence, despite the fact that such a marriage has no legal sanction or significance.

It all started with Linda Baker, a dental hygienist from the United States who married herself in 1993. It is largely regarded as the first publicised act of self-marriage, with roughly 75 of Baker’s acquaintances in attendance, where the bride pledged “I do” to honour herself in sickness and health until the day she dies.

Last year, a Brazilian model named Cris Galera (33), declared that she was terminating her single marriage after just 90 days because she had fallen in love with someone else.

There are no social conventions or regulations. They might be comparable to regular two-person weddings or they can be completely different. Since the practise gained traction, service providers from all over the world have sprung up to assist their self-marrying consumers.

In Canada, “Marry Yourself” provides wedding planning and photos, while IMarriedMe.com in San Francisco sells sologamy ceremony kits that include a wedding band and vows. Cerca Travel in Kyoto provides a two-day self-wedding package.

Bindu announced her intention to marry herself, stating that she will conduct a wedding replete with all traditions such as pheras and sindoor application.

“Today, for the first time in history, women can afford to live on their own, grow their jobs, own their houses, construct their own lives, and have children if they desire,” Alexandra Gill, founder of Marry Yourself Vancouver, told CBC News. This was not an option for our moms and grandmothers…. The concept of sologamy might imply self-marriage, but it also flips the stereotype of the sad, lonely spinster on its head. Women are weary of being told that if they haven’t married by a specific deadline, they are failures.”

“The unifying thread in most of the stories (about self-marriage) that I hear is a promise to take care of oneself as one hopes or imagines a lover would,” author and life coach Sasha Cagen says in her book “Quirkyalone.” Self-matrimony is also framed by women as a one-of-a-kind solution to the problem of women forsaking their own needs in relationships. They think you should marry yourself first before marrying anybody else.”

Popular TV programmes such as Sex and the City, Glee, and Doctor Who have all included self-marriages. Carrie Bradshaw was portrayed marrying herself in a 2003 episode of Sex and the City, prompting a USA Today claim that this fictitious character is the “godmother of sologamy” to some.
