SUMMARY

The Technology Development Board under the Department of Science and Technology has signed an agreement with Peptris Technologies Private Limited in Bengaluru to provide financial assistance of ₹86 crore in continuation of the Research Development and Innovation Fund. The investment is targeted to push the VIGOR programme forward quickly, with the goal of advancing four promising drug candidates identified through artificial Intelligence into Technology Readiness Level 6, dramatically advancing these candidates toward formal clinical development.

Background of Peptris Technologies and pipeline targets

Peptris Technologies Private Limited is a Bengaluru, India-based health-tech startup established in 2019 with a primary focus on artificial intelligence-driven drug discovery.

The company is using proprietary generative artificial intelligence and unsupervised learning methods to create optimized molecules, significantly cut down on wet lab usage, and shorten preclinical development time.

Preceding this government assistance in financing, Peptris had crossed paths with the IAN Alpha Fund, the second fund in the series managed by Indian Angel Network Group, and raised a Series A funding round of ₹70 crore with strong market traction.

VIGOR, which stands for Advancing AI-Discovered Molecules from Bench to Clinic, is the flagship program with a projected total project expenditure of ₹172 crore and a specified development time period of six years.

The strategic partnerships center on progressing four promising drug candidates through advanced preclinical development, scientific validation, and rigorous clinical trial preparation.

These include PEPR111 in the field of neuromuscular disorders and oncology, PEPRX101 in the field of alopecia, and PEPR202 in the field of neuropathy, plus PEPR112 specifically targeting Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

A wide range of preclinical studies and investigational new drug-enabling studies will be performed on each candidate. The financial assistance provided by the board shall be made available to a company through an Optionally Convertible Debt instrument to provide flexibility for funding.

Artificial intelligence role and strategic impact

AI is fast changing the face of pharma research because of its capability to help identify high-potential molecules, study complicated disease mechanisms, and develop new treatments via effective predictive models.

However, computational discoveries alone are not enough without proper experimental confirmation. This obstacle has been overcome by Peptris’ sophisticated artificial intelligence-driven discovery engine, relationships with global CRO partners, and proven pharmaceutical development capabilities, resulting in a strong bridge from the computational bench to the clinic.

The integration of AI into the field of drug research and development appears to have the potential to significantly change the way new drug candidates are identified and used, as suggested by Shri Rajesh Kumar Pathak, Secretary of the Technology Development Board.

The board actively promotes technology-driven programmes through the Research Development and Innovation Fund to effectively close the long-standing clinical-development technology divide. Peptris Technologies also noted that the investment will help the startup advance its discovery pipeline and address high medical-need preclinical milestones.

Conclusion

The financial assistance of ₹86 crore received from the Research Development and Innovation Fund of the Technology Development Board and Department of Science and Technology represents a milestone for Peptris Technologies. The VIGOR programme is a testament to India’s rising stature as a global leader in the healthcare sector, combining cutting-edge artificial intelligence techniques with rigorous preclinical trials across critical therapeutic areas, including Oncology, Neuromuscular Disorders, Neuropathy, and Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. The strategic partnership further enhances the pharmaceutical industry’s research and development capabilities in the country, providing opportunities for developing novel therapeutics that will significantly improve patient outcomes.
