Introduction:
Gas, the anonymous compliments-based social media app that Discord purchased in January for an undisclosed fee, is Discord kills Gas, the Anonymous Compliments App being discontinued. On November 7, the app will be formally discontinued, the business informed TechCrunch on Thursday. The Information broke the story of the shutdown first.
A Discord representative confirmed the Gas app’s shutdown on November 7 in a message sent to the company’s email address. “We purchased Gas intending to assist our growth across new and core audiences and make Discord the best place to chat, hang out, and have fun with friends online. The team will continue to be crucial in our efforts to make it simpler for users to connect with their friends on Discord.
According to an internal document obtained by The Information, the closure isn’t shocking since Discord CEO Jason Citron explained to staff that the firm bought Gas mostly to gain access to its engineering talent. In the memo, Citron stated that the business intended to continue operating Gas until growth levelled.
When Gas was introduced in August 2022, youths quickly took to it because it intended to provide an excellent social media network. Within two months, the app had 1 million users who used it daily. In the Apple App Store rankings during its peak of popularity in October and November 2022, Gas ousted TikTok and other well-liked social apps.
According to smartphone analytics company data.ai, Gas has had 7 million downloads worldwide since its release. The app received 3.1 million downloads in November 2022, the month with the most downloads for Gas. In the months that followed, gas expansion started to slow down. Only 2,900 people downloaded the app in the previous month. Regarding the top iOS social media apps by US downloads since August 29, 2022, Gas comes in at number 16. It’s important to note that the software was only accessible in the US, Canada, and iOS.

High school students were the intended audience for the app, which asked users to respond to surveys about their classmates. The poll questions were created to increase users’ confidence rather than undermine it. The chosen adolescent would then get an unidentified note complimenting them. The idea was popular probably because, in contrast to conventional social media, Gas was intended to benefit users.
Nikita Bier, the creator of TBH, another anonymous social app aimed towards high schoolers where users answered good questions about others anonymously, also developed Gas. In 2017, Bier sold TBH to Facebook. Due to limited usage, Facebook ultimately shut down the app in 2018.
It appears that Bier is getting ready to release a new app. Bier tweeted, “Next week there will be a new King of the App Store.” Although the app’s potential is uncertain, given Bier’s last two ventures, it might be another anonymous social app.
