On July 6, Meta released Threads, a platform for text-based conversations, and the news quickly went viral. Within hours of its release, users were installing the app out of pure curiosity and discussing their experiences so far. It was previously stated that within 24 hours of its release, Threads had received millions of downloads. And now, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, has disclosed that the app has exceeded a staggering 100 million sign-ups in just 5 days without marketing.
Mark Zuckerberg took to Threads to show his gratitude for the early success of Meta’s Twitter counterpart, Threads. Mark wrote on a Threads post that the application reached over 100 million sign-ups without any promotion. Mark believes the crowd to be genuine and organic, as no promotions or marketing were done to advertise Threads.
Threads launch is a direct competition to Elon Musk-owned Twitter. With the latest developments and tweaks on Twitter, like limiting the number of tweets, people could view each day, restricting those without an account to viewing tweets, and so on, people felt betrayed and cheated. Ultimately people were looking for an alternative, but nothing was as good as Twitter in the market. On the lookout for a new and fresh alternative, people found solace in the Jack Dorsey-backed Bluesky. Bluesky saw a sudden surge of accounts. Fast-forward to July, and we have seen Threads.
While Threads seems like a Twitter lookalike, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri tells otherwise. Adam clarifies that Threads is not a replacement for Twitter. Adam also takes pleasure in speaking that Meta has no intention to replace Twitter with their new application, Threads. While people may disagree, Mark Zuckerberg-led company Meta’s Threads was launched to create a ‘public square for communities on Instagram that never really embraced Twitter and for communities on Elon Musk-run platform that are interested in a less angry place for conversations, but not all of Twitter.’
Threads will not cover news and politics but everything, and they will not be limited to anything. There is a sense of freedom in Threads, and people who have already used it feel its worth. “Politics and hard news are inevitably going to show up on Threads — they have on Instagram as well to some extent — but we’re not going to do anything to encourage those verticals,” Instagram’s CEO wrote in a Threads post.
The Threads app looks like an amalgamation of Twitter and Instagram. There are options to like, comment, repost, and share a Threads post just like it is on Twitter. Though the functionality is a bit similar, the icons remind us of Instagram. Signing up on Threads is very easy and simple.
To sign up on Threads, a user must have an Instagram account. People can sign-up via their Instagram account credentials. After downloading the Threads app, there is an option – ‘Log in with Instagram.’
With a single tap on that option, users will be escorted into the app to fill in their Instagram credentials. Once entered, Threads is ready to use. If a user is already logged in to the Instagram account on a device and wants to log in to Threads on the same device, then a single click on the ‘Log in with Instagram’ is enough to enter the Threads app.
There is a whole level of customizability available for users. People can change their usernames specifically for Threads or keep them the same as their Instagram usernames, and people can also import their Instagram bio or make a new one.
