Due to the option to subtitle or dub episodes in the viewer’s native tongue, the Korean-language Netflix series “Squid Game” became one of the most-watched programs ever on the streaming service. To support the larger creative economy, comparable technologies are now being introduced to YouTube. Today, YouTube revealed that it would be introducing multi-language audio track capability. This would enable artists to add dubbing to both new and old videos, enabling them to be seen by viewers around the world.
The function helps YouTube by extending the reach of the videos on its site, which benefits both artists who may be able to reach a larger audience and YouTube itself.
Although YouTube claims to have built the technology to allow multi-language audio tracks in-house, the firm notes that creators will still need to work directly with outside dubbing companies to produce their audio tracks. The same menu where users may now change other options like subtitles or audio quality will still be available after a video has been posted, allowing viewers to select an alternative audio track. Which additional language the developer wants to support is entirely up to them.
However, YouTube reports that during early tests of the function with a limited group of producers, the tool had been used across more than 3,500 films published in more than 40 languages. As of last month, viewers who watched the videos in a language other than the one used for the original recording accounted for more than 15% of the total time spent monitoring the dubbed versions. Additionally, YouTube reports that users watched over 2 million hours of subtitled videos daily in January alone.

Jimmy Donaldson, a well-known creative with 130 million members worldwide, participated in the initial test group. He dubs his 11 most popular videos in 11 other languages to attract more foreign viewers to his channel. In a conversation with YouTube’s Creator Insider, Donaldson outlined the advantages of the functionality, pointing out that it is simpler to submit multilingual audio files than to manage and maintain several different foreign-language channels.
“Running one channel versus twelve is much simpler; you don’t have to create twelve different thumbnails.” You must upload on 12 and respond to comments on 12. It’s so much simpler to have everything in one location. Additionally, it’s much easier for the fans,” Donaldson added. It’s also much more accessible for people to comprehend since all the dubs are in one spot, on one video, whether you’re in Mexico or India.
A notification and invitation will be sent to eligible authors with access to the functionality, allowing them to participate. Once they have access, they can use the new Creator Studio feature.
When asked how many creators will be invited for this initial expansion, YouTube declined to reveal, only indicating that the figure was in the “thousands.” It also did not specify a timeframe for when the choice would be widely accessible to more creators, although it did state that it is working toward that objective.
