App for caller identification On both iOS and Android, Truecaller has made call recording available. While limitations on both operating systems prevent apps from natively recording calls, Truecaller gets past this limitation by dialing a special recording line.
Users on Android can begin call recording right away by using Truecaller’s dialer. Truecaller will display a floating recording button if they are using a different dialer.
The process is a little challenging on iOS. For both incoming and outgoing calls, users must use the Truecaller app to dial a recording number and merge the calls. A beep will be heard by the other caller to alert them that the call is being recorded, the company confirmed.
Notably, Truecaller started providing call recording to its premium Android users in 2018 and expanded its availability to all Android users in 2021. The Google Accessibility API was banned in 2022, even though several apps, like Truecaller, took advantage of it to record calls. As a result, the capability had to be removed from the company’s apps.
The business announced that in addition to call recording, it would also offer users transcripts – a feature it hopes to launch in the coming weeks. Users will also be able to quickly access information in the recorded talks by searching through transcripts.
Truecaller’s strategy is not original. Call recording has been done using methods similar to those used by RecMycalls and Tapeacall. The Swedish business claims that its approach forges a new path by only keeping data locally and not collecting any user information.
The Indian publication The Caravan claimed in 2022 that Truecaller had amassed customer data without their permission. These accusations were then refuted by the firm in a statement.
With select iOS users in the United States, Truecaller has begun testing this feature. All users with premium subscriptions are now receiving it from the company. As a result of this roll-out, Truecaller currently provides three different plans in the United States: a basic plan that is ad-free ($1 per month), a premium plan that includes call recording ($3.99 per month), and a top-tier plan that includes a call screening assistance ($4.49 per month).
According to Zarringhalam, the business is organizing its membership tiers and has begun considering how to provide various levels with features that make sense for the user at each price point.
Truecaller has over 500,000 users in the US, 10% of whom, according to the company, are on a subscription plan. India is the company’s largest market, with 100 million users, and has more than 350 million users overall.
In its most recent earnings report, the company noted an 18% year-over-year rise in subscribers. Despite an increase in paying subscribers, these results show that subscriptions only made up around 12% of the company’s total revenue, with the remainder coming from advertising.
