One of the most well-liked tools for streaming videos is VLC Media Player. Anyone who used a computer in the 1990s or the early 2000s is aware of how widely utilised the VLC video player was for watching movies and TV shows. According to a previous report by Medianama, the VLC Media player website appears to be blocked in India, and the restriction appears to have been in place since March of this year.

RTI filed gives reason for VLC Media Player ban in India

Nobody is aware of the rationale behind the ban, according to a Right to Information (RTI) request made by the Internet Freedom Foundation. The Internet Freedom Foundation (IFF) stated that they submitted the RTI on the website’s ban to the Department of Telecom in June. Meity, or the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, received the request from DOT. On July 14, Meity responded, “No information is available [with MeitY],”

In response to the website’s access ban in India, the IFF tweeted that they were “seeking information on the grounds on which videolan[dot]org has been restricted for access in India and whether any hearing opportunity was provided to the website owners prior to the website’s access ban in India.” They only received a one-line response, saying that Meity does not have this information.

In a follow-up tweet, IFF said that they had “submitted the first appeal on this response, stating that it is illegal and shows non-application of mind.”

IFF has been contacted for additional comments regarding the VLC media player ban. All we currently know is that it is not possible to access the website. The app is still available for download from the Google Play Store or the App Store. Additionally, it should function properly if you have the player installed on your laptop.

The official Twitter account for VLC Media Player also tweeted about the ban, seeking for assistance and appearing to have no idea why it was implemented. There should be some explanation as to why the website cannot be accessed in India.
